Few bags are as iconic and popular as the Dior Saddle bag, its unique construction replicated by many brands. John Galliano modeled the bag after horse saddles and the D shaped stirrups in 1999, the shape of the bag a wink to those in the horse riding tax bracket. In the quarter century of the bag’s popularity, the saddle bag has had many iterations in a variety of colors, material, and patterns.
The accessories it has inspired are quite lovely, my favorite being the Dior saddle owl and bird key rings. The saddle shape also features as pockets of Dior’s cargo pants. After a quarter decade, the Saddle Bag is set to take shape in perfume form as Dior Cuir Saddle, a leather perfume in the brand’s La Collection Privée.

The fragrance is in line with the supple and gentle style that forms modern leather perfumes rather than some sharp leathers we’ve seen in the past. This is achieved through the partnership of both leather and its softer iteration, suede. The accords, along with the skinlike and powdery musk will give the intimate feeling of a leather saddle bag you’ve worn and cherished for years. Floral notes, along with the warm, woody amberwood with its mild sweetness, makes leather a sophisticated and wearable note.
The bottle is accented by leather details inspired by the Saddle Bag, adding intrigue to an otherwise minimalist bottle.
Cuir Saddle isn’t Dior’s first fragrance inspired by the supple feeling of a leather bag. François Demachy’s now discontinued Cuir Cannage from 2014 takes that title. Cannage, of course, is a reference to the woven pattern which is a motif throughout Dior pieces. Modeled after the woven patterns on Monsieur Dior’s chairs, it is most famously seen on the Lady Dior bag.
I expect it to be quieter than their smoky Leather Oud that was spiced with cloves and cardamom, the birch and sandalwood the only gentle influences.
Dior is expected to release Cuir Saddle soon on their website and stores soon. Can’t wait to get your hands on Dior Cuir Saddle? Stay up to date on new perfume releases on Perfume Mag.
