Diptyque is a modern and chic brand and you’ll find the coolest people in your life wearing their fragrances. But you’d be surprised to find it began in France in 1961 with L’Eau.
Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Montadre-Gautrot and Yves Coueslant were the three friends who co-founded the maison, united by their curiosity and love of nature. Artistry has always been at the heart of Diptyque and it’s easy to see why- Desmond was a painter, Christiane an interior architect, and Yves a globe trotting stage designer. The fragrances are designed creatively and stand apart from others. Even the bottles, minimalist as they may be, display original art work that represents the fragrance within.
Diptyque began with upholstery fabrics- a strange beginning for a perfume house- and later branched out to scented candles. This shows their identity as more of a lifestyle brand offering body care products , pajamas, home decor, and even stationery.
Tam Dao EDT
Key notes: Sandalwood, Cedar, Cypress, Spices
Fragrance Family: Woody
Creamy sandalwood and warm cedar made this fragrance the chic woody fragrance it is. The fragrance is named after a rural district in Vietnam and upon seeing pictures of its tranquil green landscapes, you will understand how this calming fragrance got its name. It dries down to something lightly sweet and spicy from the combination of amber, Brazilian rosewood, and spices. If you want a sweeter version, the Eau de Parfum concentration would be a better option.
Philosykos
Key notes: Fig, Fig Tree, Fig Leaves, Black Pepper
Fragrance Family: Aromatic Green
The lactonic, green, sweetness of fig is a truly unique note in perfumery. The last time I loved it so much was in Guerlain’s Vetiver Fauve but Philosykos’ fig had me way before that. With the fruit, its leaves, and the wood accords combining together, the fragrance gives the aura of relaxing by a fig tree.
Orphéon
Key notes: Jasmine, Juniper Berries, Powdery Notes, Cedar
Fragrance Family: Woody Chypre
If you’re looking to add a new autumnal scent for the season, you should give Orphéon a chance because trust me when I say it’s perfectly autumnal. The juniper berry at the top is fresh and aromatic and a tinge herbaceous. The jasmine is light and airy, supporting the powdery character of the perfume. It gives walking through an expensive department store’s cosmetics aisle. This fragrance is also available as a solid perfume.
Fleur de Peau Eau de Toilette
Key notes: Mandarin, Iris, Musk, Ambrette
Fragrance Family: Floral Musk
The Eau de Toilette is more youthful and fun compared to the more powdery Eau de parfum. It is a scent of our times, a ‘you skin but better’ light floral. There is a lot of brightness and energy like a morning that leads to an exciting day ahead. It’s light, clean, and feels like a quick hug with a friend you see frequently. This fragrance is also available as a hand cream, body lotion, and body wash.
L’Eau Papier Eau de Toilette
Key notes: White musks, Rice accord, Mimosa, Woody Notes
Fragrance Family: Clean Woody
There’s no way I’m making a Diptyque list without one of my summer favorites. It has the light airiness of steamed rice with a hint of that special sweetness in the background. The musks give a very intimate feeling and the dry down is deep and clean sort of woodiness. In all the fragrance feels like an ode to writing.
Eau Duelle Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Pink Pepper, Vanilla, Incense, Cypriol
Fragrance Family: Aromatic Spicy
There’s a bright, spicy beginning that is distinctly not Diptyque which transforms quickly to Eau Duelle’s warm, comforting vanilla. It’s a very elegant and milky smoky vanilla that becomes magical with the woods and incense. The start may not be for everyone but I’d suggest you give it a chance to develop into the unique not too gourmand vanilla of the fragrance.
Eau Rose Eau de Parfum
Key notes: Rose, Chamomile, Lychee, Artichoke
Fragrance Family: Fresh Floral
Eau Rose is one of the more popular Diptyque perfumes. Lychee is the first out of the bottle, watery, sweet and leading to a very realistic rose fragrance. Diptyque use rose centifolia and Damascena rose along with firad rose, the rose water that is left over after the initial extraction and reveals more of the lychee-like facets of the flower. The green artichoke adds a realism to the rose perfume, accomplishing its goal to make a truly unique rose fragrance.
Eau Rihla
Key notes: Leather, Saffron, Cedar, Iris
Fragrance Family: Fruity Leather
Meaning ‘journey’ in Arabic, Rihla exudes all the warmth of a journey through the desert. Hot Pink Pepper starts Eau Rihla off, reminding us of desert sands. The leather is soft and deep, balanced out by fruity accords and making it different from Diptyque’s usual style. It dries down smoky and mysterious.
Lilyphéa
Key notes: Violet Leaf, Ginger, Vanilla, Cardamom
Fragrance Family: Fresh Green
Lilyphéa disappears as quickly as money from your wallet when you buy it. But I still can’t help but love this beautiful fresh fragrance from their Essences collection. It invokes a lily pond as delightful as a Monet painting. It brings together feelings of fresh air, pond water, and the greenness of lilypads floating about. If you want to try out more of the fragrances from the Essences collection, Diptyque sell a perfume set of 5 of 10 ml each.
