Do You Have a Spare AED 60K for a Perfume?

Ever had your jaw drop seeing a vintage perfume bottle in all its artistry? Chances are you were looking at a René Lalique piece. In a time when perfume bottles were purely functional objects, René Lalique saw the opportunity to infuse art into the mundane. The expert glassmaker opened his retail store in Place Vendome in 1905, situating him close to Francois Coty. Then began the partnership between the perfumer and glassmaker, creating some of the most magnificent works of art to display on the dressing table.

Lalique’s own perfumes come in interesting bottles when you compare them to the modern clean rectangles that other brands prefer. The newest is born out of a collaboration with American artist and pilot James Turrell. Turrell is known for his play with light and color, he is often called the “master of light”. Together with Lalique, he has produced art you can display at home if you have AED 60k– sorry, AED 60,100 lying around.

It’s a mystery what ‘sage-scratched leather chaps’ could even mean for those of us without access to Lalique or James Turrell pieces. The fragrance, according to Lalique, complements the deep, sunset-like hues of the bottles. But the main attraction isn’t even the perfume contained in the 100% crystal bottle. The colors are a combination of a bright, citrusy yellow and a vibrant blue reminiscent of the cobalt blue Dans la Nuit bottle.

It is said to be inspired by the pyramids of Egypt, but also the stupa shapes of Asia. What the two have in common and how they are represented in this work, we may never know. Another geographical location, one more specific than Asia is represented in the work– Arizona.

All of the 100 limited-edition bottles are handmade and come with a certificate of authenticity. All bottles come engraved with the signatures of James Turrell and Lalique. Contact a Lalique advisor or head on to Harrods for a bottle.
