Thorns and All: Rose Perfumes That Earn the Hype

Rose gets a bad rap. Say rose perfume and people picture soap, potpourri or something their nan kept on the dresser. A good one is none of that.

Rose bends to whatever sits beside it. Pepper turns it sharp. Patchouli drags it somewhere darker. Add a little lychee and it goes dewy instead. So the question was never whether you like rose, it’s which rose, and how loud you want it. It gets filed under perfumes for women, though half this list is unisex, and it sits right next to jasmine perfumes on most shelves. These four cover the main moods, from a quiet daytime rose to one that announces you from the hallway.

Everyday and Fresh Diptyque Eau Rose Eau de Parfum

diptyque edp perfume

Brand Diptyque
Best for Women
Fragrance family Floral Woody Musk
Notes Top: litchi

Middle: damask rose, Grasse rose, rose water, chamomile, artichoke

Base: musk, woody notes

Release year 2022
Projection Low to moderate
Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin

Smells like a rose right after rain, before anyone thought to add sugar to it. Lychee up top gives that dewy, just-picked feel, then damask and Grasse rose settle in with a green, slightly bitter artichoke note that keeps it off the powdery path. Same lychee move Parfums de Marly pulls in Delina, just quieter. The catch: for an eau de parfum it wears light and close, low to moderate projection and maybe five hours before it turns into a whisper. Not a conversation starter, which is sort of the point.

The Unisex Signature Le Labo Rose 31

le labo rose 31

Brand Le Labo
Best for Unisex
Fragrance family Floral Woody Musk
Notes Top: rose, cumin

Middle: rose, vetiver, cedar

Base: musk, guaiac wood, oud, olibanum, labdanum

Release year 2006
Projection Moderate
Perfumer Daphné Bugey

You’ve smelled this on strangers in lifts for the better part of twenty years and couldn’t name it. Rose 31 barely reads as rose. It’s rose wrapped in cumin, cedar and a dry streak that sits closer to vetiver perfumes than to anything floral, with oud and incense underneath and moderate projection. The cumin is the whole gamble, warm and skin-like to some, plain sweaty to others. Longevity on skin is decent. On clothes it can fade faster than you’d want. The bottle is plain to the point of boring, which somehow makes it cooler.

When You Want a Reaction Tom Ford Rose Prick

tom ford rose perfume

Brand Tom Ford
Best for Unisex
Fragrance family Chypre Floral
Notes Top: Sichuan pepper, turmeric

Middle: May rose, Bulgarian rose, Turkish rose

Base: patchouli, tonka bean

Release year 2020
Projection Low to moderate
Perfumer Guillaume Flavigny

A friend wears this on purpose to throw people off, and it works. Rose Prick opens on Sichuan pepper and turmeric, a spicy almost buzzy hit, before three roses come through jammy and full. If you like peppery scents, this leans all the way in. The patchouli and tonka base runs warmer and sweeter than the dark, smoky patchouli in Portrait of a Lady below. For a Tom Ford Private Blend it does not perform like the price suggests, low to moderate projection and it can go quiet in a few hours. The name is doing more work than the juice.

Cold Nights, Big Entrance Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady

Brand Frederic Malle
Best for Women, worn by anyone
Fragrance family Oriental Floral (Chypre)
Notes Top: rose, clove, raspberry, black currant, cinnamon

Middle: Turkish rose, patchouli, incense, sandalwood, ylang-ylang

Base: incense, sandalwood, amber, musk, benzoin

Release year 2010
Projection Heavy
Perfumer Dominique Ropion

It walks into a room a few seconds before its owner does. That’s the design. Portrait of a Lady is a dark rose loaded with patchouli, incense and clove, sat on a base closer to sandalwood perfumes than to any soft floral, with raspberry and cinnamon keeping it from turning grim. Projection is heavy and it lasts most of a day, so one spray is a decision, not a top-up. Too much for an office or a warm room, easily. People either wear it for years or return it inside a week.
